About us

We are a long established firm of Chartered Accountants, and have been in business for over 80 years.  The firm was established in 1929 by Wyndham James as a branch office of Stephenson Smart & Co, a Peterborough firm of accountants who specialised in farming.  After several years, Mr James bought the firm and renamed it W J James & Co, a name that we have retained despite Mr James’ retirement in the 1960s.  The original office was above a newsagent’s shop in The Bulwark, Brecon, but we moved to our present offices in Bishop House in 1962.  We also have an office in Hay-on-Wye with outstanding views of Hay Castle.

The practice is run by three directors, supported by a team of 13 experienced staff, all dedicated to providing a high level of support to clients.

The practice enjoys a wide client base ranging from personal tax clients, sole traders and partnerships, through to high profile charities and corporate businesses.
